Teams battle for Mulcahy memorial trophy

There is a brand new trophy for the Avonmore Munster Schools’ Junior Cup winners this season, the silverware presented by Castletroy College, winners of the double in 2008.

The tragic death some months ago of teacher and coach of the junior team that season, Eamonn Mulcahy, led to the offer and acceptance from the Munster Branch of a gleaming new memorial trophy.

In today’s semi-final at Dooradoyle (3.30pm), Castletroy attempt to put another one over on their Cork rivals, Christian Brothers College, whom they defeated in the Under-15 McCarthy Cup final last season.

This season, Castletroy beat St Clement’s in the opening round before getting past Rockwell and Crescent Comprehensive.

Christians beat St Munchin’s and Glenstal but know they are up against it today.

Meanwhile, Presentation Brothers College go into battle against Ard Scoil Ris at Musgrave Park today (3pm), the prize for victory being a place in the final at the same venue.

Ard Scoil Ris have drifted more towards Gaelic games in recent years, so it’s hard to see them upsetting a highly-rated Pres side.

It therefore looks like Castletroy are best placed to stop the final becoming an all-Cork affair.

However, Pres, with a decent pack, should have the ace card in centre and captain Paul Kiernan.
