‘End of a long punishment’ as Chabal departs Racing Metro
Chabal revealed he was unhappy with the situation at the Paris club but did not criticise Berbizier or club president Jacky Lorenzetti.
Chabal said: “I was not happy. The cause? Communication with Pierre Berbizier.
“It’s the end of a long ordeal. It’s the end of a long punishment.”
Chabal had been looking to sign a contract extension with the club but admitted the final straw was when he could not reach agreement with Lorenzetti.
The 34-year-old, who began his career at Bourgoin and also played for Sale Sharks and won 62 caps for France, added: “I thank the president for allowing that things run as smoothly as possible so that we can move forward and rebuild the club and myself.”
Chabal revealed he had not spoken to his Racing team-mates as they were on holiday. “I have received text messages. I will tell them goodbye next week.”
He revealed one regret upon his departure – not completing his playing contract at the club.
“I am disappointed not to finish a good player in Racing. But I want to look ahead and not behind.”
Chabal, who can also play at lock or flanker, did not make France’s World Cup squad or the RBS 6 Nations group ahead of the opener against Italy in Paris tomorrow.
He claims to have proposals from Japan, the southern hemisphere and France to continue his playing career.
