Newbridge stage superb comeback

NEWBRIDGE College produced a stunning injury-time comeback to defeat Kilkenny College and advance to the Leinster Schools Section B Senior Cup semi-final at Portlaoise yesterday.

The victors trailed by four points (14-18) in injury-time before two stunning tries and a conversion produced an unlikely victory.

Full back Gary Delahunt burst over one minute into injury-time before Leinster Schools interpro Fionn Carr received the ball from the kick-off and sprinted 60 metres for the killer blow which was converted by scrum-half David Aherne.

Their semi-final opponents, St Patrick’s Classical School Navan, had full back Alan McCormack to thank for their 6-0 quarter-final victory at Coolmine yesterday.

St Andrew’s will rue full back Jonathan Mawhinney’s disallowed try beside the posts in the 47th minute when centre James Murphy was wrongly penalised for crossing.

McCormack’s two penalties gave his forwards something to defend and openside Shane Dawson, number eight Sean Gallagher and hooker Conor Brady relished the challenge.

St Paul’s College brushed aside Templeogue College 26-0 at Donnybrook.

A Conor Keegan penalty had the victors three points clear at the break. It was one way traffic from then with Richard Grimes, Alan Nagle and Keegan completing the scoring.

Connacht champions Sligo Grammar School enjoyed a 64-3 win over Presentation College Headford while Garbally College, Ballinasloe defeated St Attracta’s College, Tubbercurry 15-0.
