Gatland woe as Wasps stung by Warriors
The London side's European ambitions were dealt a blow as Celtic Warriors inflicted a shock home defeat on them at the Causeway Stadium.
Gatland's side slipped to third in Pool Six and now must hope to extract revenge against the Warriors at the Brewery Fields as well as beating Calvisano and Perpignan.
"I think the result was a big surprise to a lot of people," said Gatland, whose side had not lost in a game in any competition for over two months before the European clash.
"Now we have to win next week, beat Calvisano and perhaps the decider will be against Perpignan away."
All of Wasps' points came from the boot of Alex King while King's opposite number Ceri Sweeney matched his efforts and helped set up the decisive try of the afternoon.
However, video footage of the 74th-minute score by Tongan winger Aisea Havili has since put the legitimacy of the touchdown in question, prompting Gatland to wonder why there are no video referees in European competition despite the match being televised live.
He added: "There are video referees in rugby league, Super 12 and the Premiership so why not in the Heineken Cup when there is so much at stake?
"I have seen the try on TV and I've got no problems about it as Sweeney kicked through and Kenny Logan was beaten but with so much at stake and so many cameras at the ground why not have a video referee?"
Meanwhile, Stade Francais prop Pablo Lemoine has been banned for six weeks after being sent off in the Pool One match against the Gwent Dragons.
Lemoine was red-carded by English referee Tony Spreadbury in the 53rd minute for head-butting Ben Breeze as his team crashed to a 20-12 defeat at Rodney Parade.
The six-week suspension rules the Uruguay international out of the remaining three European Cup group matches, against The Dragons, Ulster and Leicester Tigers.
In Munster's Pool 5, Treviso gave their failing European Cup campaign a lift with a shock 42-33 win over Bourgoin in a ten-try thriller on Saturday.
The win is Treviso's first of their European campaign this season and lifts them to third in Pool 5.
England's Stuart Legg proved one of the men of the match, kicking four conversions and three penalties for the hosts in a topsy-turvy encounter in front of barely 3000 spectators.
Things looked to be going decidedly in favour of the visitors, who had taken a 20-6 lead by the half hour after a lively start which included a third-minute try from back Anthony Forest.
Kevin Zhakata went over the line for their second barely ten minutes later and Pierre Raschi added Bourgoin's third to put them in control.
Treviso did not get going until the half hour, when Italian international Enrico Pavanello went over for their first try.
Four minutes later Sergio Parisse crashed over the line to claim a second try for the hosts.
After the break Treviso continued their fightback through Australian Brendan Williams, who went over the line after only three minutes, and a fourth try through wing Gonzalo Canale in the 50th minute put the hosts convincingly in front.
Legg, who had provided perfect kicking for Treviso all day, then went over to grab his own try in the 56th minute.
Meanwhile, Bath's incredible season continued at Stade Selery yesterday with an invaluable 32-25 win over Colomiers in the first leg of their Parker Pen Challenge Cup tie.
The Zurich Premiership front-runners take a seven-point lead into next weekend's return match and are favourites to advance to a quarter-final meeting against Grenoble or Beziers.
Centre Andrew Higgins scored two second-half tries to help overcome a 18-12 deficit at the break, with the in-form boot of Ollie Barkley supplying 12 crucial points.
French international Thomas Castaignede was in inspired form for Saracens at Vicarage Road, scoring two tries and adding 12 points as Glasgow were outclassed 37-6 in a first-leg victory which makes next weekend's trip to Hughenden academic.
At Kingston Park, Newcastle Falcons minus Jonny Wilkinson ground out a tough 10-3 victory over Montferrand and face a daunting trip to France to make the quarter-finals.
London Irish secured a 20-13 win over Narbonne at Madejski Stadium but will not be looking forward to next weekend's trip across the Channel to play the powerful French club.
Fly-half Mark Mapletoft slotted five penalty goals and left winger Justin Bishop scored his side's only try.
