All-Ireland League round-up: Division 1A champions St Mary’s College defeat Clontarf

Defending Division 1A champions St Mary’s College once again got the better of Clontarf, while Nenagh Ormond and Blackrock College remain unbeaten in 1B following Round 2 of the Energia All-Ireland League.
Cashel and Galway Corinthians have set the early pace in Division 2A, five teams have recorded back-to-back maximum-point returns in 2B North, while Clonmel and Old Crescent are the sides to catch after two rounds in 2B South.
St Mary’s continued their winning start to their Division 1A title defence with a 36-31 victory over Clontarf at Templeville Road, racing into a commanding 33-14 half-time advantage before surviving a determined second-half fightback.
Mick O’Gara was central to the champions victory, contributing 21 points from the tee, including five penalties. Richie Bergin, Conor Pierce and Dan Goggin supplied the Mary’s tries, with Goggin crossing in first-half stoppage time.
Clontarf responded with five tries of their own, captain Dylan Donnellan completing a hat-trick to go with scores from Tadhg Bird and Oisin McCormack. Three second-half tries brought the visitors back into contention, but Mary’s held on for their second victory.
Old Belvedere and UCD are the early Division 1A leaders after both collected maximum points for the second successive weekend. Belvedere were emphatic 56-10 winners over Ballynahinch at Ollie Campbell Park, with Robbie Russell completing a hat-trick and Jayden Beckett and Sam Wisniewski both crossing twice.
UCD defeated Lansdowne 43-26 at the UCD Bowl. Maxim Aschenbrenner and Charlie Molony both scored twice, while Paddy Clancy contributed 23 points from four conversions and five penalties.
Old Wesley earned their first win since returning to the top flight, edging Cork Constitution 36-33 at Energia Park. Paidi Farrell crossed twice for Wesley, with Tom Larke’s 79th minute penalty ultimately separating the sides. Young Munster also got off the mark, a late penalty try giving them a 21-17 victory over Terenure College at Lakelands Park.
In Division 1B, Nenagh Ormond and Blackrock College lead the way on nine points after maintaining their unbeaten starts.
Nenagh were 31-21 winners over Naas at New Ormond Park, scoring five tries through Patrick Scully, who crossed twice, Conor McMahon, Robbie Tynan and Matthew Brice. Naas responded with three tries but could not overturn a 17-7 interval deficit.
Blackrock returned from the Mardyke with a 31-26 victory over UCC. Thomas Quinn and Jack Deegan gave the visitors the ideal start before James Burke and Harry Waters added second-half tries. UCC secured two bonus points after fighting back with four tries of their own.
Dublin University produced the biggest score in 1B, running in six tries to defeat Garryowen 46-22 at College Park. Highfield were 24-7 winners away to Instonians, with Nicky Greene crossing twice, while MU Barnhall edged City of Armagh 23-22 at Parsonstown despite the visitors scoring four tries.
Division 2A has Cashel and Corinthians locked together on ten points following successive bonus-point victories.
Cashel backed up their opening-round success with an impressive 36-29 victory over Queen’s University at The Dub. Philly Ryan and Alan Flannery both crossed twice, while Timothy Townsend and Ben Twomey added further tries in a six try performance.
Corinthians also made it two from two, defeating Greystones 26-19 at Dr Hickey Park. Sean Walsh, Mark Boyle, Tadhg Johnston and Dominic Williams supplied their four tries, with Williams’ score deep into added time securing the bonus point.
Dungannon are just a point further back after a 31-25 victory over Wanderers at Merrion Road. Peter Nelson scored twice and finished with 21 points, while James Girvan’s 79th-minute try helped seal the result.
Ballymena also maintained their perfect winning record, edging UL Bohemian 31-28 in Limerick. Shannon, meanwhile, earned their first victory of the campaign in dramatic fashion, with Peter Dougan crossing in the 84th minute to snatch a 25-19 win over Galwegians at Crowley Park.
Division 2B North has produced a remarkable start, with five teams sitting on maximum points after two rounds.
Clogher Valley lead the way following a 38-17 victory at Navan. Callum Smyton crossed twice as Valley scored six tries to add another bonus-point success to their opening-round win.
Malone are alongside them on ten points after an emphatic 36-7 victory away to Sligo. Sam Green was the standout performer with a hat-trick, while Michael Cartmill and Cameron McCaughey also crossed.
Ballyclare continued their excellent start with a 36-12 win over Rainey at Hatrick Park. Jacob Scarlett scored twice, with Matthew Coulter, Adam Campbell and Mark Jackson also getting on the scoresheet.
Skerries also made it two bonus-point wins after edging Banbridge 31-26 at Rifle Park. Five different players crossed for Skerries, including Peter O’Neill, James Brennan and Rob McKey.
Enniskillen’s dream introduction to Energia AIL rugby continued with a 31-19 victory over Malahide at Estuary Road. Following their historic opening-day win against Rainey, Enniskillen produced a blistering first half to have the bonus point secured by the interval.
Sam Balfour and Harry Ingram crossed before Henry Keys struck twice, with Eddie Keys converting all four tries and adding a penalty as the visitors raced into a 31-0 half-time lead. Malahide responded with three second-half tries, but Enniskillen’s work had already been done as they made it two wins and ten points from their opening two AIL fixtures.
There were some eye-catching winning margins in Division 2B South, where Clonmel and Old Crescent lead the standings after maintaining their winning starts.
Clonmel ran in six tries in a 43-21 victory over Dolphin at Ard Gaoithe. AJ Thomas, Jack Walsh, Mbongeni Masuku and Michael Connellan helped establish a 26-7 half-time advantage before Brian O’Dea and Jason Monua completed the scoring after the break.
Old Crescent had to come from behind to beat Monkstown 44-31 at Takumi Park. The visitors led 24-15 at half-time, but Crescent responded superbly, with Jed O’Dwyer completing a hat-trick and Brian Molloy and Darragh McKeogh among their second-half scorers.
Bective Rangers bounced back from their opening defeat in emphatic fashion, running in nine tries in a 57-7 victory away to Bruff. Midleton recorded the weekend’s largest victory, defeating Buccaneers 58-0 at Towns Park.
Gabriele Baffigi, JB Du Toit, Chris O’Brien and Tom Roche all scored twice as Midleton ran in nine unanswered tries. Thomond also produced a powerful away performance, winning 55-7 against Enniscorthy at Alcast Park. Sam Birrane led the way with a hat-trick as Thomond crossed eight times.
