Weekend racing preview: Namiid can get back to winning ways at Navan

A quiet weekend on the Irish racing front with Navan on Saturday the sole meeting of the weekend. In what shapes up as another tricky card at the Meath venue, the most appealing bet comes in the five-furlong Christmas Parties At Navan Racecourse On 6th & 13th December Handicap where Namiid can get back to winning ways for trainer Johnny Murtagh and jockey Ben Coen.

Winless in eight starts as a two-year-old, the son of Acclamation was gelded ahead of the start of his three-year-old campaign.

Third at Dundalk on his seasonal reappearance, Namiid got off the mark over Saturday’s course and distance in May.

He hasn’t won in three subsequent starts in handicap company but acquitted himself well on all three occasions, finishing fourth at Navan, second at Bellewstown, and, most recently, a close third in an 18-runner contest at the Curragh in July.

A repeat of that run here might be enough to see him home in front.

The Ger Lyons-trained Amiata, who like the selection has a course and distance win on his card, is feared but Namiid gets the verdict.

Roeillaun can get punters off to the best possible start by winning the opening race, the six-furlong Irish EBF Auction Series Fillies Maiden.

The Noel Meade-trained Earthlight filly showed little on her first two starts but took a big step forward when a close second to Fighting Tears in a Curragh maiden at odds of 50-1 last month.

A week later, she showed that run to be no fluke when faring doing best of those from the smaller group to finish third of 15 to Zoar at Naas.

A marginal improvement on her two most recent runs should make Roeillaun tough to beat this weekend unless debutant Your A Daisy proves to be above average. The market may prove the best guide in that department.

The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Nursery Handicap, another six-furlong contest, is the feature and Howlin Wolf may be able to turn the tables on Supreme Lord.

Three and three-quarter lengths separated the pair over course and distance nine days ago and while that’s a significant gap to bridge, the fact Howlin Wolf will be 12lbs better off with Supreme Lord this time gives him a fighting chance of a successful revenge mission.
