Trust Better Yet, a promising third on her recent debut in Cork, to live up to her name in the five-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden in Navan.
A Lucky Vega filly, trained for Ace Stud by Jessica Harrington, she showed definite signs of inexperience on her debut just two weeks ago, hitting top gear late and staying on to finish a close third behind Walk On Harry and Southern Boulevard.
The Commonstown filly finished just a half-length off the runner-up on that occasion and, with the experience under her belt, is expected to reverse the form with the Ger Lyons runner on this stiffer track.
Southern Boulevard is rated 83, 7lb. below Michael Grassick’s Abletai, who sets the standard. But, with plenty of improvement expected, Better Yet gets the vote.
Elsewhere on an ultra-competitive card, the Joseph O’Brien-trained Leadlight might prove the answer to the two-year-old optional claimer over a mile.
This Saxon Warrior has raced just twice and performed creditably on his debut at Leopardstown back in June when, after a tardy start, he managed to finish fourth, beaten a length and a half, behind Apollo’s Comet, over seven furlongs.
That form has been boosted by the subsequent successes of runner-up Sea Of Rain and sixth-placed Tosca No Cardis.
Leadlight was then part of the Carriganog raiding party at Goodwood, started 9/2 for a seven-furlong maiden in which he was outpaced at a crucial stage before plugging on in sixth spot (beaten five Lengths) in a race won by Rafa’s de Man.
Today, Leadlight will sport cheekpieces for the first time and, stepping-up in trip and dropping in grade, should be tough to beat, with the 78-rated, Ger Lyons-trained This That an obvious threat.
The Jack Davison-trained Howlin Wolf opened his account, on his handicap debut, at the Curragh recently and might defy a 7lb. rise in today’s opener, another nursery, over just short of six furlongs.
The Cotai Glory raced prominently and appeared to win cosily from previous winner I Ready.
There should be more to come from James Ryan’s mount. And he might follow-up.
