Drunken Sailor swoops for Glorious victory
Drunken Sailor came with a strong run on the far rail to pip Harris Tweed in a thrilling race for the Coutts Glorious Stakes at Goodwood today.
Harris Tweed made a brave attempt to make all the running and looked like doing so until he was challenged strongly on both sides in the final furlong.
Jukebox Jury made his bid towards the centre of the course, but it was Kieren Fallon on the Luca Cumani-trained 9-2 shot who would not be denied as he finished with a real flourish to take Group Three honours.
Drunken Sailor prevailed by a head from Harris Tweed with Jukebox Jury just a neck back in third.
Fallon said: "This is one of my favourite horses. He's got so much ability and has done nothing but improve since joining Luca.
"You just have to time it right because when he gets to the front he idles. He's getting better and better.
"At Newbury I got there too soon, but he was much better than the rest.
"He did nothing wrong today and we got a lucky run up the inside."
Cumani added: "When I got him he was struggling to win handicaps, but now he's a Group horse and has improved to the point that he shows more turn of foot than he did, so I think that makes him a stronger Melbourne Cup candidate than he was last year.
"That's all up to the owners whether he goes and whether he runs again before then."
There was a similar climax to the RSA Thoroughbred Stakes with Frankie Dettori bringing Neebras (4-1) to snatch this Listed race.
Western Aristocrat was 11-8 favourite to come out on top, but he struggled to get past long-time leader Chef when push came to shove.
While those two were slugging it out, the Godolphin-owned Neebras found an extra gear to get up close home to win by half a length. Chef edged out Western Aristocrat by a head for second place.
Dettori said: "I was trapped in a pocket. Ryan (Moore, on Western Aristocrat) had me boxed in which meant I had to switch round and I lost a bit of momentum but I got there in plenty of time.
"We've tried to do all the fancy stuff like chasing Frankel but he's more of a Group Three horse I think."
Al Zarooni added: "He's not been a horse to trust in the past, he's run one good race and one bad one.
"We'll look for a better race next and hopefully he can continue to improve."
