Murtagh waits on appeal decision

Johnny Murtagh is likely to leave it late before deciding whether to appeal against what could be a costly six-day ban for careless riding.

Murtagh was handed the suspension by the Newmarket stewards following his victory on Starspangledbanner in the July Cup for tacking left to the far rail in the early stages of the race.

The suspension, lasting from July 23 to 28 inclusive, comes at a crucial time of the season.

It would rule Murtagh out of the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes meeting at Ascot and the first two days of Glorious Goodwood, which includes the Sussex Stakes.

His possible King George rides include Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco, who could clash with Epsom hero Workforce in the midsummer showpiece.

“I’ve spoken to Johnny before today’s meeting at Tipperary and still no decision has been made,” said his agent Eddie Byrne. “He has until close of business tomorrow to put in an appeal.”
