That'll Do for Brennan

Apprentice Ian Brennan teamed up with trainer Nicky Richards to claim the opening KB Sheet Metal & GDBS Handicap at Newcastle with That'll Do Nicely.

Brennan brought the top weight, who was gaining his third success from five starts this term, with a steady charge to take up the running well over a furlong out.

That'll Do Nicely kept on well in the closing stages to pass the post with two and a half lengths to spare over Sea Land.

Brennan said: "That was my first ride for Mr Richards. He told me to get That'll Do Nicely into a rhythm in the straight and he picked up well for me but then pricked his ears when in front.

"I am pleased with the way things are going for me this season, that is my 12th winner and hopefully there are more to come."

The totesport.com Gosforth Park Cup produced a dramatic start and finish as Tim Easterby's Captain Dunne just prevailed to take the prize under David Allan.

Buachaill Dona, winner of the race in 2008 and runner-up last year, was a 15-2 chance to take the spoils this time but his supporters soon knew their fate as he was slowly away under Adrian Nicholls, with the rider reporting his mount had refused to race.

In contrast, Captain Dunne (5-1) went about his business with enthusiasm and determination, sweeping into the lead over a furlong from home

But just as it seemed he had the race in safe keeping, 4-1 favourite Secret Asset launched a strong challenge and Captain Dunne was all out to hold him by a head.

Allan said: "I thought he had won, but he faltered near the line and lost his action and I could not use my whip again in case he became unbalanced.

"I think he has knocked a front hoof, it looks as if there is just a bit of blood there.

"I am not sure what the plans are now, but I have heard the Stewards' Cup mentioned - the fast six furlongs at Goodwood will suit him."

Dolly Royal popped up at 20-1 under apprentice Lee Topliss in the Deloitte Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Topliss brought Dolly Royal with a late run to collar Jemima Nicholas well inside the final furlong and score by half a length.

Kenny Johnson, son of trainer Bob, said: "She ran a good race to finish third at Hamilton earlier on in the season but we have been struggling to find a seven-furlong race for her.

"Dad and I have always said she wanted that trip, although I must admit I don't know if she would beat some of those behind her later on in the season.

"He (Topliss) have her a nice ride. We wanted to claim 7lb off her because we thought she would need it in a maiden and the main thing now is that she is for sale!"

The well-bred Sayyedati Storm started a well-backed 6-4 favourite but she was in trouble with two furlongs to run and beat only one home in seventh place.
