Uptight Dunguib concerns Fenton

Philip Fenton feels Dunguib needs to learn to settle in his races after his disappointing effort in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown on Friday.

The seven-year-old was sent off favourite to return to winning ways after being beaten into third in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

However, he pulled for his head throughout in the hands of Brian O’Connell.

Although Dunguib travelled strongly into the home straight, his earlier exertions then took their toll and he faded into sixth as Hurricane Fly went on to record an impressive success.

“Dunguib ran much too free,” said Fenton.

“I knew we were in trouble after he had travelled a mile as he was pulling too hard.

“He saunters away and is very relaxed at home but it is a pity he doesn’t settle in his races.

“In a lesser race, we might have got away with it but we’ve no regrets about running in the race and we still have him to look forward to next season.”

To clarify riding arrangements, Fenton added: “There will be no change next year, Brian will keep the ride.”
