Supaseus tops Darley field
Hughie Morrison’s Cambridgeshire winner Supaseus returns to Newmarket on Friday for the Thurlow Nunn Standen Darley Stakes.
The six-year-old, who also won the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot last season, is one of 14 runners in the Group Three event.
Walter Swinburn’s globetrotter Stotsfold and Richard Hannon’s consistent Ordnance Row are forced to carry penalties for their wins at the same level earlier in the year.
Godolphin’s Rio De La Plata, who showed much more sparkle when second to Confront last time, and Michael Stoute’s Hampton Court Stakes winner Glass Harmonium are other interesting runners.
Roger Curtis has declared his Group One-winning mud-lover Zafiso but with the proviso that he will only run if there is sufficient rain.
“He’s in tremendous nick but he’s in danger of going over the top if we don’t get a run into him,” said Curtis.
“When the rains come it seems there is no race for him which has been unfortunate all year.
“When we ran him in the French Derby it was like a road and when he was second in the German Guineas, even though they said it was soft, it wasn’t as soft as he likes it.
“Newmarket are describing it as good at the minute but it’s not good for him! We could just do with one heavy cloudburst.”
The former Aidan O’Brien and Paul Nicholls-trained Hebridean will have his first start since joining Luca Cumani.
David Simcock’s Bushman and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe also-ran Steele Tango are also engaged.
