Light From Mars out of this world at York
Light From Mars proved strongest as he ran out a comfortable winner of the Best Price Guarantee At coral.co.uk Handicap today, the opening event of York's final meeting this term.
Rod Millman's charge was sent off an 11-1 shot, with the trainer's son and jockey James content to track the early leaders before switching to make his challenge two furlongs from home.
Everymanforhimself had already kicked for glory and he was in front inside the seventh furlong.
But Light From Mars found plenty for pressure to run out a two-and-a-three-quarter-length winner.
Webbow finished fast inside the final few yards, but Everymanforhimself held on for second by half a length.
Millman jnr said: "A fast-run seven (furlongs) is ideal as doesn't quite get a mile.
"This was meant to be his last run (of the season) but if it stays good he'll have another run.
"If it goes soft we'll put him away and maybe go to Dubai next year.
"The ground was perfect for him."
Jimmy Quinn overcame traffic problems to deliver Theola with a perfectly-timed challenge in the 10% Cashback At coral.co.uk Handicap.
The 9-4 favourite was buried in the pack at the top of the straight as According To Pete began to tire after trying to make all.
That let Mith Hill, who had been settled on the heels of the leader, to get first run on the field, kicking on three furlongs to put daylight between he and his rivals.
Meanwhile, Quinn was having trouble finding a passage through on the Mark Tompkins-trained Theola but after switching to the outside, the filly fairly flew home to shade it by a length and a quarter at the line.
The brave Mith Hill held on for second, with Mr Crystal a further length away in third.
Quinn said: "It's on the easy side of good out there and she's laboured on it.
"But, to be fair to her, I asked a few questions and she's responded.
"She's improved all the way through the season and has a lot of filling out to do over the winter.
"She'll make a nice staying mare next season."
Layla's Hero registered an amazing last-to-first success in the Listed Coral Rockingham Stakes.
Eddie Ahern pulled the 7-2 favourite to the back of the field from the off, switching from his high draw to the middle of the track.
Layla's Hero was still sat in behind two furlongs out as Coolminx and Never The Waiter started their runs.
However, Ahern switched right to the outside in the final furlong and Layla's Hero responded in style, changing gear to pull two and a quarter lengths clear of Coolminx.
Layla's Hero was completing a good afternoon for owner Dr Marwan Koukash after his Our Jonathan lifted the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot.
"It's not bad to have a Group and a Listed race winner within an hour. He's done it very well," he said of the colt named after his daughter.
Ahern added: "He's definitely getting better.
"His best form is on good to firm ground so he'll be even better on better ground.
"I liked the way he galloped out and he'll definitely get seven (furlongs)."
Nicholls was not at the track but his wife Alex Greaves said: "He's improving all the time but he is so laid-back.
"He does nothing special at home, and doesn't stand out in the crowd, but he does it on the racecourse.
"That might be it for the season now and if he strengthens up over the winter, there would be no reason why he wouldn't get seven furlongs."
Richard Fahey has enjoyed a superb season, even by his own high standards, and Kaldoun Kingdom further enhanced the yard's record in the Coral Sprint Trophy.
Fahey had sent out 154 winners at the start of play on Saturday and Kaldoun Kingdom was sent off the 6-1 favourite to add to those laurels under Barry McHugh.
Stablemate Quest For Success set out to make all, battling with Le Toreador through the early stages, but McHugh's partner was always travelling well.
Unleashed down the centre of the track, Kaldoun Kingdom found plenty in the closing stages to account for Cheveton by a length and three-quarters.
Hitchens was back in third, with Green Manalishi in fourth.
Fahey said: "He's been running on fast ground all year and he loves York.
"He's a fair little horse with a bit of juice in the ground.
"He's been running blinders on fast ground but he needs juice in the ground and six furlongs."
McHugh said: "I was always going well - he's got a great turn of foot on that ground."
Owner Phil Smith added: "We won the Silver Cup at Ayr and now this, so we're very pleased with him."
