Borel stripped of Mine That Bird mount

Calvin Borel has lost the ride on Kentucky Derby hero Mine That Bird.

Calvin Borel has lost the ride on Kentucky Derby hero Mine That Bird.

Borel teamed up with Bennie “Chip” Woolley jnr’s gelding to create a 50-1 shock in the Churchill Downs feature in May.

He was also on board the three-year-old for the Belmont Stakes, in which the pair finished third behind Summer Bird.

The American jockey elected to ride Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness, however, and was vindicated as the star filly defeated Woolley jnr’s charge by a length.

Mine That Bird’s next scheduled assignment is the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park on August 1, but Borel will not be at the helm.

Woolley told www.thebloodhorse.com: “Calvin is in a unique position right now to have a lot of options, but his failure to commit to my horse meant I had to go a different direction.

“He’s just got other commitments he has to fulfil.

“That’s part of the game. That could happen any given day, anywhere.”
