Royal reward for Spencer
Jamie Spencer rode his way back into The British Queen’s good books after denying her a Royal Ascot winner by partnering Royal Stream to victory in the £40,000 Warwick Racecourse Eternal Stakes.
The 29-year-old jockey had been in the plate aboard Moneycantbuymelove at last week’s Ascot meeting, when he finished with great effect to reel in Royal Stream and relegate Her Majesty’s representative to second place in the Sandringham Handicap.
Eight days on from that episode and Spencer was given the leg up aboard the Sir Michael Stoute-trained 6-5 favourite, who quickened impressively to strike by a length and a half.
Spencer said: “Sir Michael left the tactics up to me. I decided to sit handy as this is a shorter trip than Ascot was and she impressed me.”
Spencer initiated a short-priced double as Turning Top broke her duck in some style with a three-and-a-quarter-length demolition job in the seven-furlong Racing UK Focused On Racing Maiden Stakes.
Trainer Simon Callaghan’s charge was having just her second outing on grass and sprinted clear passing the stands to delight those who supported her as the even-money favourite.
Callaghan said: “The form of her only run on turf at Yarmouth was working out well and I think we will now freshen her up for an autumn campaign.
“Jamie thinks she will be better with a bit of ease in the ground and hopefully she will progress from here.”
Tom Dascombe sent out his 12th individual juvenile winner of the campaign as Mdawee proved plenty fast enough in the TurfTV.co.uk Maiden Auction Stakes.
The son of Australian speedball Choisir rounded the turn with a narrow advantage in the five-furlong dash and despite running green, the 9-2 chance stuck to his task well to make a half-length winning debut.
Dascombe said: “He stood in the stalls for five minutes waiting for the others and is very green, but has come out and beaten them as he is better than them.
“He has had a few issues and has not galloped as much as the rest of mine, but he will come on for this.”
Barons Spy clung on by a neck to continue to the in-form run of Richard Price’s stable in the Racing UK Live In Your Living Room Handicap.
Price ended Wednesday by claiming the final race on the card at Salisbury and made it three wins from his last four runners as the 5-1 chance held on by a diminishing margin from 7-4 favourite Benllech.
Price said: “The stable is going well and it always tends to at this time of year.
“Six furlongs seem to suit this horse better these days and he seems to be getting faster as he gets older.”
Parc Des Princes built on his third-placed finish at Windsor on Monday to take the warwickracecourse.co.uk Handicap as the 5-2 joint favourite, while the Bollinger Champagne Challenge Series Handicap went the way of 13-2 chance Tanforan.
