Monsieur the man at Wetherby

Middleham trainer Pat Haslam sent out another winner in the famous silks of JP McManus when Monsieur won the totescoop6 Handicap Hurdle under an enterprising ride from Barry Keniry at Wetherby.

Keniry sent Monsieur to the front from the outset and defied the rest to catch them.

Monsieur had the race in safe-keeping two out as he kept up a relentless gallop to the line to score by 15 lengths from Industrial Star, who had a head to spare over third-placed Turbo.

Haslam's wife, Ann, said: "He takes a strong hold and tends to hang - that is why he is wearing a special bit - so he likes to bowl along in front and he did it that way when winning at Kelso.

"We have five horses for Mr McManus, including King Revo, who is quite exciting.

"We are looking forward to running him over fences for the first time in about three weeks."

King Killone put up a fine performance to defy top weight under conditional Phil Kinsella in the £18,000 totesport.com Handicap Chase.

Harry Hogarth's charge led four out and went onto score by six lengths from Silver Knight.

Hogarth, who also owns the six-year-old in partnership with his three sons, said: "He came on for his run first time out at Carlisle, and the ground was better here.

"We don't have any great plans for him at the moment, he takes a bit out of himself in his races so we will have to see how he is."

Richard Guest has his horses in good form and followed up a double at Newcastle on Friday by sending out Arisea to win the Racing UK And Setanta for £15 Juvenile Novices' Selling Hurdle.

The 9-4 joint-favourite took up the running after three out and galloped right to the line for Larry McGrath to pass the post with five lengths to spare over Ryhope Chief.

There was a bonus for Guest when she was retained without a bid at the ensuing auction.

Leslie Garrett, one of the members of Richard Guest Horseracing Limited syndicate who own the filly, said: "I put on a party for the staff at the stable last night and we had a great time.

"The stable is in super form and the future is looking bright, and I am pleased for Larry, he is a very good jockey."

Keith Reveley's Accordello gamely got home by half a length under Richard McGrath in the opening Racing Post Maiden Hurdle.

Reveley said: "She has been running some lovely races but it was probably the wrong thing to do to run her on the Flat, she did not have enough natural speed and I think she was getting a bit disillusioned.

"She really fought to the line. She is only a pony and is a little short on speed but she stays all day and we will step her up in trip now."

Robert Alner's Liberty Ben gained his first success at the eighth attempt in the Robert Bowett Motoring.com Novices' Handicap Chase.

The outcome appeared to rest between Olival and Lord Ryeford as they turned for home in the extended two-and-a-half-mile test,

However, the former ruined his chance when making a mistake at the penultimate fence.

Lord Ryeford looked to have things in safe-keeping at the last but Liberty Ben came with a strong run under Marcus Foley to score by half a length at odds of 11-10.

Alner's assistant Nick Mitchell said: "Marcus said Liberty Ben did not like the dead ground, but he is a nice horse and he will be better next year."

Foley, who was having his first ride for Alner, added: "He was never going from the second really, but I knew we would have a chance if he jumped the last well because he stays for ever."

Celtic Flow was given a lovely ride by Paddy Aspell to win the Freeclaim IDC CIU Raceday Handicap Chase.

Chris Wilson, who trains the mare for his mother Jean, said: "She is only a pony but she had been working very well and although she was 6lb out of the handicap we were hoping for the best."

Owner Graham Wylie had only one runner at the meeting and saw the Howard Johnson-trained Digital Media impress under Paddy Brennan on his debut in the concluding bumper.

Wylie said: "We did not run him last season because he was still a bit weak and he had been ready to run for a few weeks.

"But we were wanting some soft ground for him and we were pleased the rain came."
