Papeete up and running at Lingfield

Papeete won at the first time of asking over obstacles in the Jumping Here Again On 22nd Mares’ Only Novices’ Hurdle at Lingfield.

Classic Quart cut out most of the early running but fell at the second-last flight where Dina Smith’s five-year-old took over under Leighton Aspell to score by a length and a quarter from Tambourine Davis.

Smith, who inherited the mare when Brooke Sanders gave up training recently, said: “Brooke’s horses suffered from a bug in the spring and now I’m getting the benefit of it after they are getting over it.

“I’ve got another two from her so I hope the luck sticks.

“Her earlier races had hardened her up, which gave her the benefit over the others.”

Aspell added: “We had won our race going to the last.

“She’s genuine and should win some more of these types of races.”
