Lemons provides Oaks shock
Lemons Forever produced a late surge to notch a shock victory in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.
The Dallas Stewart-trained filly was sent off a 47-1 shot and her one-and-a-half-length success over Ermine makes her the longest-priced winner in the 132-year history of the race.
Lemons Forever was settled at the back of the 14-runner field by jockey Mark Guidry but she made steady progress to lay down her challenge in the final furlong.
She quickly collared Ermine and pulled clear while Bushfire kept on to finish third, although she was later found to have interfered with Red Cherries Spin and was placed sixth with Wait a While promoted to third.
āThis is big-time. Anybody knows you got your ups and your downs but right now weāre on an up and Iām very grateful,ā Stewart told www.bloodhorse.com.
āIāve won a lot of good races and Iām lucky to have great owners, but this is the ultimate.ā
Balance was sent off the 8-5 favourite but she faded out of it two furlongs from home and eventually finished 11th.
