Halford faith in Murtagh

Trainer Michael Halford insists Johnny Murtagh is “up to the challenge” of partnering Golden Cross in the Ballymore Properties Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse on Sunday.

Murtagh will have his first ride in a Grade One hurdle event aboard Halford’s charge, who was a ready winner of the November Handicap at Leopardstown.

The Irish rider, who is spending the winter as a jump jockey, has already steered Golden Cross to two victories on the level at the Curragh and Leopardstown.

And Halford is adamant he has the right man at the helm for the two-mile-four-furlong contest over timber.

He said: “Johnny’s excited about riding him and has had 20-odd rides hurdling so he knows what it’s all about now.

“He rode him over a few hurdles on Tuesday and gave him a blow on Thursday so I see him riding my horse as a major positive.

“I am certain he is up to the challenge.”

Golden Cross faces only four rivals in the Hatton’s Grace and is reportedly on top of his game ahead of the race.

“He’s in good form and is fit and well, thank God,” added Halford.

“We always felt that when he was hurdling before he’d be suited by further so I don’t think staying will be a problem.

“He’s entitled to take his chance and the ease in the ground will help; we’ll be wiser after it.
