Thornton recovering from Aintree tumble

Robert Thornton expects to be back in action later this week after suffering a heavy blow to his ribs in a fall at Aintree on Sunday.

Thornton parted company with the Alan King-trained Halcon Genelardais at the last flight in the William Hill/Stanleybet Children In Need Handicap Hurdle.

The 27-year-old visited a specialist this morning where it was revealed he had not broken any bones as a consequence of the fall.

Thornton will take a couple of days off to recuperate before returning on Wednesday or Thursday, which means he will be available for the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday.

“I’m OK – it was just a heavy fall,” explained the jockey.

“I was badly winded and took a blow to the ribs but I’ll be fine in a couple of days.

“I’ve been to see the doctor this morning and he’s sorted me out.

“I have to decide whether I come back on Wednesday or Thursday but will definitely be available for the Hennessy meeting.”
