Frankie Dettori is poised to bid for a first big-race victory since recovering from a broken collarbone aboard Layman at Goodwood on Sunday.

The former Andre Fabre-trained colt is one of 15 entries remaining in the totesport Celebration Mile and will look to confirm the promise he showed when winning the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury earlier in the month.

Kerrin McEvoy partnered the three-year-old on that occasion, but Dettori, who is due to return to the saddle later this week, will take over for the Group Two event at the Sussex track.

“We were very pleased with Layman at Salisbury and he is an intended runner at Goodwood on Sunday,” Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford told the Racing Post.

“How he acquits himself will help determine his programme over the autumn.”
