Costly ban for O'Neill
Dane O’Neill will miss two days of the Glorious Goodwood meeting after picking up two separate suspensions when completing a 156-1 double at Newmarket today.
The rider was initially suspended for one day after the stewards found him guilty of using his whip without giving his mount time to respond when winning the Invesco Perpetual Handicap on Fictional (13-2).
O’Neill’s day got even worse though in the next race when he was found guilty of using his whip with excessive frequency on another winner, Annambo (20-1), in the Dodson And Horrell Handicap.
He will be out of action on both July 28 and 29.
Polar Jem made a successful seasonal debut when lifting the feature race of the day, the Siemens Smart Homes Technology Aphrodite Stakes.
George Margarson’s filly was sent off a 12-1 shot in the Listed event over a mile and a half and she was smartly away under Adrian McCarthy.
Polar Jem set a decent pace in front and although the 11-8 favourite Asawer tried to challenge in the final furlong, she proved too strong and went on to win by half a length.
Blaze Of Colour, a 20-1 shot, was a further four lengths away in third.
Trainer Barry Hills and his jockey son Michael also enjoyed a fruitful afternoon notching a near 152-1 treble courtesy of Killybegs (9-1), Paper Talk (7-1) and Clara Bow (10-11).
