Hurricane roars to Longchamp success

Andre Fabre’s Hurricane Run blew away his five rivals to stretch his unbeaten run to three in the Prix Hocquart at Longchamp this afternoon.

Jean-Claude Rouget’s Ruwi was the odds-on favourite to take his record to five from five in this Group Two French Derby trial run over 10 furlongs.

But it was Fabre’s son of Montjeu who stole the show on his first crack at this level.

Christophe Soumillon had the 3.2-1 shot well placed in fourth turning for home on ground described as good, and coming wide this pair eased past Ruwi on the inside with well over a furlong left to go.

From then on it was win as you like for Hurricane Run, who had five lengths to spare over the always prominent Silver Cross with supplementary entry Orion Sar three-quarters of a length back in third.

Ruwi, tackling the trip for the first time, was the same distance away in fourth.

The winner sports the same colours as Fabre’s 2004 Prix du Moulin heroine Grey Lilas and was the second leg of a big-race double for Soumillon, who 30 minutes earlier had landed the Group Three Prix d’Hedouville over a mile and a half on Fracassant.
