First blood to Nicholls

My Will got the better of Joaaci in a thrilling finish to the SBJ Nelson Steavenson Novices’ Chase at Perth today.

The victory was a boost for Paul Nicholls in his struggle with Martin Pipe, who was responsible for the runner-up, in the jump trainers’ championship.

Nicholls started the day £35,473 in arrears, but the 100-30 winner picked up £10,393 in prize money, while the second landed £3,942.

Ruby Walsh sent My Will past the front-running Joaaci three out and he looked set to score comfortably.

But Joaaci rallied and after an untidy jump by My Will at the last fence they were locked together up the run-in before Nicholls’ runner got on top to win by a head.

They came close together after the last and the stewards held an inquiry into possible interference, but after deliberating for about 10 minutes the placings remained unaltered.

Jazz D’Estruval was sent off the 5-4 favourite but was let down by his jumping. A bad mistake six fences from home put paid to his chances and he trailed in third, 19 lengths behind the front two.
