Sire De Grugy in line to start cantering next week

Sire De Grugy is set to resume cantering on Monday as the Queen Mother Champion Chase hero continues to make progress from a hip injury that has kept him off the track so far this season.

Trainer Gary Moore has been so pleased with his stable star’s condition that he feels Sire De Grugy may not need to undergo a scan.

The eight-year-old was ridden last week for the first time since the injury, and Moore believes the time is right to step up his work.

“He hasn’t had his scan yet. We don’t know whether we are going to have a scan or not,” said Moore. All being well he’s been very good so far and he will start cantering on Monday.”

Meanwhile next month’s stanjames.com Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock is the likely target for The New One after trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies ruled his stable star out of the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day.

The six-year-old clinched his third victory of the season with a most impressive display in last weekend’s International Hurdle, setting up a potentially mouth watering clash with Irish raider Faugheen over the Festive period.

However, that battle will now likely have to wait until the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Twiston-Davies said: “We’re going to miss Kempton and the plan is to go to Haydock on January 17, all being well.

“I just think it’s better spacing for us.”
