Hennessy plunge on Djakadam

Antepost Hennessy Gold Cup favourite Djakadam is now a general 4-1 for Saturday’s race after 23 were left in after the forfeit stage yesterday.

Hennessy plunge on Djakadam

Support for the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old — bidding to become the first horse of that age to win the 3m2½f handicap — has seemingly grown in the past few days and the 10-1 on offer last week soon disappeared with Djakadam 5-1 over the weekend.

That price tumbled again yesterday and he is now 4-1 with most firms.

Paddy Power said: “I think Djakadam would have won the JLT and he could be thrown in off a mark of 142. Punters seem to agree and he’s been the ‘buzz’ horse halving in price from our opening 8-1.”

Optimism in the Willie Mullins camp is high, although a tough task awaits with fellow leading contenders Many Clouds, Fingal Bay, Smad Place and Rocky Creek also standing their ground for the Hennessy.

Sam Winner, Don Cossack, Buywise and Easter Day, who ranged from 14-1 to 20-1 in the Hennessy betting, were not confirmed by connections.

The shortest-priced Hennessy favourite in recent years was the mighty Denman, who scored his second triumph in the race at 11-4 in 2009.
