Equestrian: Allen narrowly denied in Stuttgart
The Wexford 19-year-old made his World Cup debut a memorable one a fortnight ago with a victory in Italy aboard Molly Malone V.
Yesterday, four faults with the 10-year-old grey mare put paid to any repeat, while a similar result for Mayo’s Cameron Hanley and Living The Dream also denied them a place in the jump-off.
Tipperary’s Shane Breen and the chestnut stallion Golden Hawk accrued eight faults.
Allen’s 13th place finish, however, still saw him strengthen his position in the Western European League, earning him four points for a total of 24 and edging him towards the magical 40 that typically earns a place in the final, which will be staged next April in Las Vegas.
Briton William Whitaker danced to victory with Fandango in what was the fifth leg of the World Cup season, earning the keys to a car.
His performance was an impressive 2.5 seconds faster than American Lucy Davis and Barron in a 10-horse jump-off.
At the two-star show in Lier, Belgium Denis Lynch won the Grand Prix on Querida.
