Ruby facing lengthy spell on sidelines

RUBY WALSH faces many months on the sidelines, after sustaining a double fracture of his right leg in a fall off Corrick Bridge at Down Royal on Saturday.

Walsh took a crashing tumble at the fifth fence and was immediately attended by the medics on the course.

He was soon removed to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he was found to have broken the tibia and fibula in his leg.

Walsh was operated on at the Royal Victoria Hospital yesterday. Speaking afterwards his sister and agent, Jennifer, said: "Ruby was well over an hour in theatre and the surgeons were very happy with the way the operation went.

"There were no complications, but at the moment it is unclear as to how long he is going to be on the injured list.''

Walsh, of course, broke his arm in three places aboard Celestial Halo at the Aintree Grand National meeting in April and only returned to action in the middle of August.

Saturday had started so well for him, as he guided Kauto Star to victory in the Grade 1 JNwine.com Champion Chase.

And then, for good measure, he also landed the other big race on the card, the Grade 2 ladbrokes.com Chase, on The Nightingale.

Walsh was in cracking form since returning to action and his double at Down Royal moved him into fourth place in the jockeys' championship, behind Paul Carberry.

He is currently on the 30-winner mark for the season, 13 adrift of the leader. The 31-year-old has been champion jockey on eight occasions, including for the last six years.
