Bolger waits on Polly plans

JIM BOLGER will wait until tomorrow morning before deciding on his plans for Saturday’s Audi Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh.

Bolger waits on Polly plans

The Coolcullen trainer has three possibles for the 10-furlong Group One with Investec Oaks sixth Akdarena, Coronation Stakes second Gile Na Greine and Gold Bubbles, who was runner-up in the Musidora Stakes, all entered.

“Akdarena came out of Epsom a little on the light side and it’s taking her time to get her weight back on,” said Bolger.

“We’re getting there slowly but whether we make it or not, I wasn’t going to decide until Friday. It’s a possibility she will run.

“They are all in the same boat really, they are all going to be late decisions.

“Gile Na Greine ran at Ascot and she had to travel home. She is very hardy and didn’t lose a lot of weight so she’s in the mix.

“We have had a bit of luck running fillies in the Coronation and then coming back for the Pretty Polly. It’s probably not a bad indicator. There’s only eight or nine days between the two races.”

Meanwhile, Popmurphy could bid to bounce back to form in the At The Races Curragh Cup on Saturday.

The four-year-old, formerly trained in England by Karl Burke, made an excellent start to life in Ireland when finishing a narrow second in the Alleged Stakes, beating multiple Group One winner Fame And Glory in the process.

The latter turned the tables in no uncertain terms as Popmurphy finished last of five in the Mooresbridge Stakes last time, but trainer Paul Deegan expects an improved performance when he steps up in trip.

“He could take his chance but we’re just keeping an eye on the ground,” said Deegan.

“He’s definitely a better horse when there’s a bit of give in it but over a mile and six furlongs, it might not be such a concern.

“His first run for us was a brilliant run where he split She’s Our Mark and Fame And Glory.

“We didn’t realistically expect to beat Fame And Glory again the last day and the ground was pretty quick that weekend as well.

“He’s in good form at the moment and was fifth in the Queen’s Vase last year so we know the trip won’t be a problem for him.

“He’s in the Irish St Leger and that would be the long-term plan with him.”
