Kalacan looks good for starters

GER LYONS’ once-raced Kalacan can get punters off to the ideal start in the opening Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Auction Maiden at Limerick tonight.

Kalacan looks good for starters

The gelded son of Kalanisi made a promising debut at Leopardstown on Sunday and can justify his trainer’s decision to bring him out again so quickly.

Kalacan was slowly away in that six furlongs contest and at no stage of the race did he look like winning.

He had a lot to do turning for home, but stayed on stoutly in the closing stages to finish three and a half lengths runner-up behind Jim Bolger’s Duaisbhanna.

The selection will surely know a lot more of what’s required now and stepping up another half a furlong in trip can only be a help.

The disappointing Greatwallofchina may have found his level in the Clohessy’s Bar EBF Maiden and gets the nod.

Dropped 6lbs following his latest effort at Dundalk, Aidan O’Brien’s colt has a whopping 18lbs in hand of, arguably, his main rival, Fay Street.

The son of Kingmambo currently holds a rating of 100, but is almost certainly well flattered by that and this is probably far from cut-and-dried.

What is a fact is that Greatwallofchina ran one of his better races at Dundalk, third to Prince Shaun and Red Eye Express, and this represents a fair drop in class.

Another who can be described as a bit disappointing, Fortune Seeker, has reasonable prospects in the moderate Advanced Services Mares Maiden Hurdle.

She ran alright at Killarney on Tuesday night, third to shock winner Missoni, and this is a good opportunity! The booking of Ruby Walsh is hardly a minus.
