Russell suffers crushing title blow

DAVY RUSSELL has suffered a crushing blow in his efforts to be champion jockey for the first time.

Russell suffers crushing title blow

Russell took a fall off Francis Du Mesnil in a hurdle race at Fairyhouse on Tueday and confirmed yesterday he has ligament damage to his right wrist.

“My doctor is confident I will be back for the start of the Punchestown Festival (Tuesday week), but it’s very frustrating’’, said Russell.

“I’ve had a great season and it is far from the end of the world, but I don’t think I will be winning any championship now.’’

He currently leads the champion, Ruby Walsh, by 121-116, but with Walsh in action in Ireland over the next four days the gap looks sure to bridged, at least.
