Punters lose out as Homer nods

HOMER nodded - much to cost of punters in the first semi-final of the Irish & European Stakes at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

Punters lose out as Homer nods

An impressive winner in the heats at the venue a week previously, the Paul Hennessy trainer Longvalley Homer was punted from 1-2 to 1-3 to follow up in the opening semi but, after a slow start and being in trouble at the opening bend, he could only finish fourth to 10-1 chance Wynwansoon.

In as a reserve, Wynwansoon made all for a two and a half length success ovetr Tapioca Tom in 29.12.

The favourite could only finish fourth as well in the second semi-final. Punters eventually sent Travara Mike off the 9-4 jolly for this one but he too was tardy at the break and met trouble in running afterwards.

Victory went to Crossfield Ben who tookover after Bearforest Rebel lost his footing at the second bend. The winner had gone clear by he third bend and eventually had four and a half lengths to spare over Idaho Girl in 29.18.

Fastest standard distance winner of the night, and by some way the biggest margin winner, was Egmont Member in the opening first round heat of the TRF A4 Stakes.

The Denis Fitzgerald trained dog, winner of his only previous race a month ago, was a 6-4 chance to follow-up. Having led Karma King into the bend, he came clear from halfway to eventually have 13 lengths to spare over Karma King in 28.83.
