Dettori chalks up another century
The Italian got Davids Mark (11-2) home by a short-head in the Live Video On www.attheraces.co.uk Handicap before landing a smooth victory by five lengths on Poise (1-3) in the Rouse & Co Maiden Stakes.
Richard Quinn had a less fortunate time, having to give up his last two rides of the evening after being unshipped from Jools on the turn for home in the Slough Estates Handicap won by Fen Gypsy.
Meanwhile, Marcus Tregoning is still undecided as to where his top-class horse Mubtaker will make his seasonal reappearance.
The seven-year-old has not been seen on a racecourse since finishing second to Dalakhani in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp last October.
The Lambourn trainer has been considering the Stan James Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on August 14, a race the horse has won for the last two years, and the Group One Juddmonte International Stakes at York three days later.
Mubtaker suffered from tendonitis in the spring, discovered when he was being trained for a campaign in Dubai.
Tregoning said: “He’s in good form, but a decision has not been made yet as to where he runs.”
Elsewhere, exciting juvenile Abraxas Antelope will bid to maintain his unbeaten record when he steps up to Group company in the Scottish Equitable Gimcrack Stakes at York on August 18.
The Imperial Ballet colt runs in the colours of millionaire owner Graham Wylie and is trained at Howard Johnson’s County Durham base.
He has made quite an impression in his two starts to date, cruising home at Hamilton on his debut before overcoming trouble in running to win readily in a well-contested novice event at Doncaster.
“We hope to run him in the Gimcrack. He won for us at Hamilton by about six lengths and then at Doncaster after getting boxed in, so he has showed his mettle,” Wylie said yesterday.
“He’s getting stronger, he’s put on quite a few kilos since his last race. But he is an easy horse to get fit and Howard is happy with him.”
However, Wylie, who has assembled a powerful string over jumps and on the Flat since teaming up with Johnson, would like to see a drop of rain ahead of the Group Two contest on the Knavesmire.
