Last chance for Eddery tocomplete his 28th century

PAT EDDERY makes his first visit of the winter to Wolverhampton today determined to ride the one winner he needs on the last day of the year to give him a 28th domestic century.

Last chance for Eddery tocomplete his 28th century

The 11-times champion has mounts in the first six races on a seven-race card at Dunstall Park.

He had hoped to chalk up his 28th ton in the last 29 years at Lingfield on Saturday but was left on the 99-winner mark after Dunhill Star gave him his only success from six rides.

And a ban ruled him out of yesterday's final meeting of the year at the Surrey track.

But he does have a strong book of rides at Wolverhampton today.

His best chance would appear to be on hat-trick scorer Fast Track for Richard Hannon in the fifth race, the Bet Direct Football Cashbacks Handicap, although all his mounts do look to have sound chances.

He kicks off on Carols Choice for Derek Haydn Jones in the 12.35 Bet Direct At Dunstall Park Handicap Division One, followed by the Brian Meehan-trained Essequibo in the 1.05 betdirect.co.uk Selling Stakes and Engulfed for William Jarvis in the 1.40 Littlewoods Bet Direct Maiden Stakes.

He partners Up Tempo for Tim Easterby in the 2.15 Bet Direct On 0800 32 93 93 Handicap, then Fast Track at 2.50 before getting the leg up on Gay Kelleway's Glory Quest in the 3.25 Happy New Year From Bet Direct Handicap at 3.25.

TONY McCOY is a mere 7-4 chance to ride 310 winners or more by the end of the National Hunt season.

That is the verdict of Irish bookmakers Paddy Power, who have produced a set of prices on the number of winners the champion jockey will have before the curtain falls on the present campaign on April 27.

McCoy smashed Sir Gordon Richards' long-standing record when amassing 289 winners last term and he has raced to his fastest 200 this winter, being on 208.

Paddy Power quote McCoy at 9-4 to ride no more than 289 winners, 5-1 to total 290-299 inclusive and 9-4 to score between 300 and 309.

AD HOC continues his preparation for the Martell Grand National by running in the Unicoin Homes Spa Hurdle at Cheltenham today.

The eight-year-old, trained by Paul Nicholls, faces four rivals in the three-mile test.

"Ad Hoc is fine. He ran well at Cheltenham last time over hurdles and it is a nice prize tomorrow and we thought we would let him take his chance he seems fit and well," said Nicholls.

The Shepton Mallet handler is also expecting a big run from Vol Solitaire in the Unicoin Starter Homes Novices' Chase over an extended two miles. It promises to be another excellent race, with Martin Pipe's Golden Alpha among Vol Solitaire's four rivals.

Nicholls said: "He ran very well last time when second at Haydock where the ground was quick enough for him. He won well before that and the stiff track and soft ground will suit him tomorrow. Hopefully, Golden Alpha will give him a good lead."

Tomorrow, Nicholls is looking forward to saddling Sud Bleu in the George Stevens Handicap Hurdle.

Said Nicholls: "Sud Bleu has 10st and he will go on the soft ground. He was a bit disappointing last time out but he did not get the run of the race and we hope for a better show."
