Longer trip ideal for Markason

IT’S a long way from Cork to Downpatrick, but trainer Gerry Cully can make the journey pay by saddling Markason to take the Carryduff Shopping Centre Handicap Hurdle at the northern track today.

Longer trip ideal for Markason

The four-year-old is best known for landing a decent gamble, 14-1 to 5's, at Fairyhouse three runs back and hasn't been disgraced in two subsequent efforts.

At Thurles, Markason appeared to find the extended two miles and six further than he cared to travel when third to Lord Graney.

Then at Clonmel six days ago two miles seemed on the short side for the selection, who was noted doing his best work at the end when third behind Allez Petit Luis.

This two miles, two furlongs trip should prove ideal and Markason can go close, with a useful 7lbs claimer, Martin Ferris, aboard and against modest opposition.

Bricklad, beaten half a length by Markason at Fairyhouse, is fancied to run a big race in the opening Fosters' Lager Handicap Hurdle, despite a 4lbs hike in the weights.

Dublin Hunter Paul Carberry is a significant booking is the choice in the Down Hire Centre Beginners 'Chase.

Successful in a three mile maiden hurdle at Naas last season, he managed to negotiate the fearsome Fairyhouse fences when runner-up behind Leading The Way last month.

No Stranger, a clear second behind the classy Back On Top in a point-to-point at Dromahane, is the one to beat in the first division of the Sentel Maiden Hunters 'Chase.
