Dow Jones set to make gains

SLIGO this evening houses a moderate eight-race programme, which holds no appeal whatsoever and represents a minefield for punters.

Dow Jones set to make gains

Michael Halford’s Dow Jones is the nap choice in the first division of the Allianz plc Handicap over a mile and a half.

The last time the six-year-old ran on the level, he indicated a little event such as this was within his compass!

That was at Roscommon 15 days ago when the selection was beaten a length into second spot by Stuttgart.

It wasn’t a bad effort, considering Stuttgart had previously performed well in better company at Naas.

Dow Jones went up just a pound for that effort and has since produced another reasonable display, third to Barrack Buster over flights at Kilbeggan last week.

The second section of the Allianz plc Handicap is best left to Thomond O’Mara’s April Dancer, who made a promising reappearance when third to in-form Team Allstar at Tramore earlier in the month.

Shadow Ash, who showed plenty speed for a long way, before fading to take fourth behind Alexander Icequeen at Limerick, could squeeze through a dreadful looking Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Auction Maiden.

Desert Grass, winner of a maiden at Naas at the back-end of last season but who has yet to strike form this campaign, is easily the highest rated horse in the Sligo Claiming Race and gets the vote.

Western Flyer, fourth to Far From Trouble at Fairyhouse - third placed Mac Three has scored in the meantime - may be the one in the Bumper!
