Light facing tough test in double quest
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt beat Rule Of Law, Let The Lion Roar and Percussionist in good style in the Epsom Derby earlier this month.
However, the runner-up and third were finishing fast and are both set to renew rivalry at the weekend after Godolphin forked out the €95,000 required to add Rule Of Law to the field.
There are 13 in the race at the five-day stage.
Frankie Dettori will take the ride on Rule Of Law in Ireland after opting to partner stablemate Snow Ridge at Epsom.
“He’ll work tomorrow morning and, if everything’s fine, he’ll go to the Irish Derby,” the rider told At The Races yesterday.
“North Light won on merit and is the best three-year-old mile and a half horse. But you can’t be frightened of one horse. He could have an off-day and we could come good.” He added of Snow Ridge, who has not run since the Derby: “He came out of the race really bad and has been very quiet, so perhaps it wasn’t the Snow Ridge that we all know.”
Let The Lion Roar’s trainer John Dunlop was keen to take on North Light again in the immediate aftermath of Epsom and is happy with his charge going into the rematch.
“We’d like to see a bit of rain because it has been just as dry in Ireland as it has been here,” the Arundel handler said. “It’s pretty fast and he would certainly like a bit of give in the ground.
“He’s had a good time since Epsom and did a couple of good bits of work last Friday and today. I couldn’t be more pleased with him.”
- Cashmans bet: 8/11 North Light, 4/1 Let The Lion Roar, 13/2 Rule Of Law, 8/1 Grey Swallow, 9/1 Percussionist, 10/1 Aidan O’Brien stable, 12/1 Day Flight.
