Hennessy hope in Supreme form
After a successful first season over fences, which included a 12-length victory in the Grade Two Mildmay Novices’ Chase at the Aintree Festival, the seven-year-old is set to shoulder 9st 13lb in the Grade Three handicap.
The Sue Smith-trained gelding is owned by Trevor Hemmings and his racing manager Michael Meager said: “The Hennessy is the aim - I spoke to Sue this morning and the horse is fine. The race should suit him. He won a three-mile-one-furlong novice chase at Aintree last season, so the trip of the Hennessy (three miles, two and a half furlongs) should prove no problem.”
Simply Supreme fell at the first fence on his final start of last season in the Scottish National, but picked up the winning thread when hacking up on his seasonal debut in October.
Said Meagher “He had a nice school round Carlisle after his break, and he won the way one might have expected him to at the ratings.”
However, Meager did fire a warning shot to punters who have backed Simply Supreme in recent days.
“He won’t run at Newbury if the ground comes up fast. He likes a bit of cut, but it seems to be the obvious race for him as it often goes to second-season chasers,” he said.
