Daniel Wiffen didn't take long to get back to an all-too-familiar position on top of a championship podium as Ireland's Olympic hero claimed gold medal at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Poland as teammate Evan Bailey added another medal to the team's haul with a bronze.

Wiffen, a double medallist at last summer's Paris Games, roared to victory in the 1500m Freestyle final in a time of 14:14.96 to win the event for the second-successive year. The 24-year-old bided his time before overtaking Hungarian Zalan Sarkany with a trademark storming finish to add a second piece of hardware to the haul from Lublin.

Earlier this week, the 24-year-old had shown little rustiness as in his first championships having undergone surgery on his appendix just three months ago when he claimed bronze in the 400m free.

Later on Thursday, Bailey finished in a dead heat for the bronze medal in the 200m Freestyle final.
