9.18pm: Mona McSharry, a bronze medallist in Monday's 100m breaststroke final, couldn't make it into the 200m version, swimming a 2:24.48 that was well away from the PB she set before these Games and finishing 11th between the two heats.

The top eight went through.

It is Wojcik's first win in seven encounters with O'Rourke.

4:45pm: Kellie Harrington will be in the ring shortly for her quarter-final against Angie Paola Valdes Pana of Colombia with the chance to secure at least a bronze medal.

4:09pm: This isn't the last we've heard of Jude Gallagher

“I am only 22 so in four years’ time I’ll be a much different boxer. I will only grow from this. You never know, I will go on now and set my sights on LA, be peaking come 26, 27. I’ll be a different boxer.”

Maurice Brosnan heard from Gallagher after his defeat to Tokyo Olympic boxing silver medallist Carlo Palaam in the 57kg category.

3:50pm: After a delay due to a lack of wind in Marseille, the sailing is underway in the men's skiff. Ireland's Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove went into the day in second. They have dropped to third after race 10.

2:37pm: Palaam takes the first round 3-2.

1:59pm: Rachael Darragh's Olympic Games has ended with a straight sets defeat to 2016 gold medallist Carolina Marin

1:57pm: Are Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy still underdogs?

“We still are,” said O’Donovan, tongue firmly in cheek. “That was a big upset today. Everything we’ve thrown at (the Swiss) all year, they’ve had an answer to but today, we got one up at them. The number one seeds (are) Italy – we haven’t beaten them all year.”

1:27pm: Nathan Timoney on finishing third in the men's pair semi-final, and qualifying for the final, along with Ross Corrigan.

“That was epic, epic racing! Definitely a replication from last year’s World Champs final. I think it was necessary. We definitely had to go out a little harder than we did in the heats. A lesson learnt. We knew we’d definitely suffered for it a little bit for it in the second half and obviously in the last 250m the Kiwis were coming back at us quite swiftly, kudos to them but to be in front, you’re in control of the race and if we could see them coming we could kind of react. I think we did that pretty well. We were just holding on for dear life in the last 150.

“In the middle of it it’s hard to know sometimes where you are. The way I race is I try to be as internal as possible. Sometimes Ross would make the call and let me know where we are but I like to be internal and certainly, in the last 250 you realise you’re in for a dog-fight and that’s where the body wakes up and you’re like ‘right, let’s make a move.’”

1:13pm: Swim Ireland high performance director Jon Rudd on watching Daniel Wiffen and Mona McSharry win medals

12:17pm: Mona McSharry on her 200m breaststroke heat.

“Honestly, the mind was more tired than the body. It’s just been a lot and yesterday was just a chill day for me,” she said.

“I was trying my best not to expend too much energy mentally and this morning I was definitely a bit quiet but I think I’m always like that going into a 200. It was a good race so hopefully I can bring more energy tonight.”

12:07pm: Shane Lowry on his Olympic experience so far

“But it was nice to kind of be in the Village for a day and hang out with some people. I spent the whole day with Sarah Lavin. I got to know her pretty well that day and the story and what she has been through is nothing short of incredible. She gained a huge new fan that day and I hope to see her go on and do great things next week."

Needing to finish in the top three to advance, the Enniskillen pair went out hard, passing 500m in front and hitting halfway in second. But they came under pressure in the third quarter, slipping back to third and soon coming under pressure from New Zealand, who had beaten them in the heats.

However, they changed gears in the final few hundred metres to repel the challenge from New Zealand by just over half a second, taking third behind Romania (6:29.86) and Great Britain (6:31.56). Cathal Dennehy.
