Bates leaves fitness decision to Murray

Great Britain captain Jeremy Bates revealed the final decision on whether Andy Murray faces Serbia and Montenegro in the Davis Cup will be down to the player himself.

Murray has been a major doubt to line up at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow after being confined to his bed last weekend suffering from a bacterial infection.

But Murray was able to take part in a 40-minute practice session yesterday and Bates will have further discussions with the British number one before a decision will be made on whether he plays in the Euro-Africa Zone clash in front of a home crowd.

Murray would become the first Scot to play a Davis Cup game on home soil and Bates indicated even if the 18-year-old is unable to participate in the singles tomorrow then he would be given every chance for the doubles and singles over the weekend.

Bates said: “I will leave the decision to him. He is not the type of person who will shy away from any pressure situation, which he has already proved in Davis Cup, in Wimbledon and finals of tournaments already in the last year.

“So I need to listen to what he says. He can tell me how he feels.”
