Irish swimmer Michael Williamson failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 200metres breaststroke in Athens this morning.

Irish swimmer Michael Williamson failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 200metres breaststroke in Athens this morning.

The 23-year-old finished in sixth place in the final heat, recording a time of two minutes and 15.75 seconds.

Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta prevailed – finishing more than four seconds ahead of Williamson.

Meanwhile, Eadaoin Ni Challarain was down in 15th place after the first run of the K1 canoeing competition.

The Galway competitor completed the course in 117.42 seconds, but she picked up a four-second penalty along the way which meant her official time was 121.42.

Germany’s Jennifer Bongardt is currently leading the event after clocking 102.96 seconds.

The equestrian team of Edmond Gibney, Niall Griffin, Sasha Harrison, Mark Kyle and Susan Shortt were in action in the cross country.
