Mark Philippoussis is relishing his first Davis Cup appearance in more than three years when Australia take on a depleted Great Britain on Friday.

Philippoussis, nicknamed “The Scud” because of his huge serve, has not played in the competition since sealing overall victory for the Australians against France in Nice in 1999.

A combination of serious injuries and a falling out with previous team management was to blame for the 26-year-old’s absence, but his return could not have come at a worse time for the unfancied visitors.

Injuries to Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski have robbed captain Roger Taylor of his two best players and any chance of victory, while the home side can call upon Philippoussis, world number one Lleyton Hewitt, world number 44, Wayne Arthurs, and doubles specialist Todd Woodbridge.
