Light wind conditions upset Ford Cork week racing

Conditions for all fleets were extremely light again to-day.

Conditions for all fleets were extremely light again to-day.

The 1720 Fleet had a general recall owing to boats over the line due to the light airs.

Conditions for the start of racing were a light North Westerly which died completely outside the harbour an hour after starting racing.

A fresh south westerly then came up resulting in the boats outside the harbour sailing in the south westerly and the boats inside the harbour remaining sailing in the north westerly.

The south westerly breeze resulted in the windward/leeward course reversing with the windward mark becoming the leeward mark and the leeward mark becoming the windward with a resulting downwind finish for the boats on this course.

The light conditions have so far upset the predictions of the pundits and anyone hazarding a guess right now as to the results at the end of the week would be very foolish indeed.

Some of the boats are particularly suited to light airs while some of the high performance flying machines are finding the going tough and hoping for wind for the rest of the week.

In Ford Cork Week 2000 the weather appears to have followed a similar pattern with light airs at the beginning of the week.

In 2000 the competition experienced wonderful sailing breezes towards the end of the week the the organisers and competitors are hoping for much of the same this time around.

In some classes positions are remaining the same after two days of racing while in others boats are moving up and down the fleets with changing positions. After racing tomorrow one could hope that a definite pattern will begin to emerge but it is all in the lap of the weather gods and what their mood might be on the day.
