Top seed Lleyton Hewitt and defending champion Gustavo Kuerten have crashed out of the French Open.

Australian Hewitt never recovered after losing a 91-minute second set on a 15-13 tie-break and committed 105 unforced errors against Guillermo Canas.

The US Open champion lost 6-7 (1-7) 7-6 (15-13) 6-4 6-3 as 15th-seeded Canas went into his first career Grand Slam quarter-final.

Canas won the final six games of the match against the Australian and then fell to the court in jubilation.

Canas will now meet 20th seed Albert Costa, after he stunned Kuerten 6-4 7-5 6-4.

The shock result ends Kuerten's 17-match winning streak at Roland Garros.

The Brazilian, who was seeded seventh, had just returned to the tour in late April following hip surgery in February.

Third seed Tommy Haas was another big-name casualty, beaten by 22nd seed Andrei Pavel 6-1 7-6 (11-9) 6-4.

Alex Corretja of Spain, last year's runner-up, beat Mariana Zabaleta 6-3 6-2 7-5.
