Ireland's women took pride of place at this weekend's Home Countries International Tennis Tournament in Glasgow finishing runners up to England in their section after a good final day against the Welsh.

Gina Niland and Elsa O'Riain recovered from a drubbing at English hands on Saturday to beat Wales in all three ties.

Niland, whose lack of recent circuit level play saw her go down to Felixstow Futures semi-finalist Melissa Berry in the 2nd round, lost just one second set game against Ellen Jones from Wales for 6-0 6-1 victory.

O'Riain had come close to tears after her outing against England's Cristelle Grier when she left court believing she had lost to "cheating" tactics and a ball called out when in.

And she was slow to settle against Welsh number one Kirsty Thomas losing the first set 1-6.

From then on it was always a bit of a struggle with breaks of serve against her in the two remaining sets to give cause for worry before she won 1-6 6-4 6-4. "I was a bit tired," she said, "but once I got into a rhythm I didn't miss much."

In the doubles, they won an easy 6-1 6-1.

And in the senior men's tournament Larne's Nelson Boyle notched up his first singles success of the weekend.

After losing the first set 0-6 and seemingly heading for a beating, he fought back to take the next two 6-4 6-2 for victory.

England were overall winners with Scotland 2nd while Ireland beat Wales for 3rd spot, both teams on section 7 wins but they had 20 rubbers on their score card to 18 for the Welsh.
