Berhanu sets new record

Dejene Berhanu’s late decision to compete in the BUPA Great North Run paid dividends after his emphatic victory resulted in a new course record.

Berhanu became the first Ethiopian to win the men’s or women’s race when he crossed the line in 59 minutes 37 seconds.

The 23-year-old’s time knocked more than 20 seconds off the mark set by Paul Kosgei two years ago.

Australian Benita Johnson put a painful Olympic experience behind her when a determined performance saw her secure a resounding victory in the women’s event.

Following her victory in the World Cross-Country Championships the 25-year-old went to Athens as a medal contender in the 10,000m but was devastated after finishing in 24th place.

Her build-up to the Games had been disrupted when she suffered tendonitis in her left shin and she was also diagnosed after the Olympics as being anaemic and having a vitamin deficiency.

Edith Masai was second in 1:08.27 with Chepkemei third five seconds behind.

Sonia O’Sullivan was sixth in 68:55.
