The American outburst arrived about a day and half late. But when it came, it crackled through Bethpage’s most captivating corner.

The 16th green is buffeted on two sides by the 15th and 17th tee boxes. The crowds throng and tremble around every bit of walkway in and out of the place. By 11.30 on the second morning of New York’s Ryder Cup, no match had yet made it as far as the 17th tee box.
