Roscommon's Olivia Costello claims the Senior Girl's All-Ireland Schools individual title at Milltown Golf Club fresh off her third place finish at The R&A U16 Amateur Championship on Sunday.
Costello, only back from The Berkshire last night, took the Senior Girls' title with 40 points. Her score combined with her Convent of Mercy Roscommon teammates Leah Lennon (34) and Anna Higgins (27) gave this team back-to-back titles which their captain Mary Seymour said was "unique".
“We’re back-to-back but we waited a long time even last year to win this. We have gone back-to-back with the same team which is good to see,” she said.
“The standard of golf here today was just extraordinary, really super stuff. Hopefully going forward there will be more coming through in the golfing scene for the school.”
Down's Rockport School took the Senior Boys' All-Ireland by a single point from Portmarnock CS (Dublin). The team of Harry O'Hara, Christian Simms and Fin Eager took a narrow win with a combined score of 69. Eager also took home the individual senior title with 39 points enough to secure the gold medal.
Team captain Debbie Hanna was delighted with the win. “Very proud of all three of them. It makes driving the long drive home feel a lot easier now."
Glenlola Collegiate's team of Lucy Morrison, Lucy Yeats and Sophie Maidment took the Junior Girls' title with an impressive score 78 to win by eight points. Morrison also claimed the Junior Girls' individual title with 45 points. Team captain and father of Sophie Robert Maidment was delighted.
“Total surprise so it is, the girls have worked hard at it this year. The girls played really, really well and I’m thoroughly, thoroughly pleased for them.
“They are three good chums as well so they are, and hopefully long may it last throughout their golfing careers.”
Limerick's Glenstal Abbey trio of JJ Power, Logan O'Connor and Karl Hennessy scored a combined 82 to take the Junior Boys' title. Top scorer for the Limerick school was Power who came second in the individual finish with 43 points.
Patrick Mullaney took the individual gold medal in the Junior Boys' section. The 13-year-old also carded 43 points but had a better back nine score to hand him the win over Power.
