Tiger Woods needs a Ryder Cup wild card after coming only 28th in the USPGA Championship – and so do 2008 star Anthony Kim and last year’s US Open champion Lucas Glover after being bumped out of a top eight spot in the final event.

Kim and Glover lost out with Bubba Watson climbing from 18th to third by making the play-off with German Martin Kaymer, while Dustin Johnson moved from ninth to sixth despite the two-shot penalty which dramatically denied him a place in the play-off at Whistling Straits.

Captain Corey Pavin names his four wild cards on September 7. Woods and Kim, who has only just returned from thumb surgery, will be expected to get two of them, with last year’s Open champion Stewart Cink and former Masters champion Zach Johnson, joint third this weekend, perhaps favourites for the other two.

Leading final positions in the United States’ Ryder Cup table (top eight qualify, captain Corey Pavin adds four wild cards on September 7):

1 PHIL MICKELSON 6,095pts, 2 HUNTER MAHAN 4,095, 3 BUBBA WATSON 3,894, 4 JIM FURYK 3,763, 5 STEVE STRICKER 3,697, 6 DUSTIN JOHNSON 3,573, 7 JEFF OVERTON 3,533, 8 MATT KUCHAR 3,415

Leading non-qualifiers:

9 Anthony Kim 3,274, 10 Lucas Glover 3,052, 11 Zach Johnson 3,051, 12 Tiger Woods 2,902.
